UGV Crawlers and LiDAR

Fulcrum terrestrial LiDAR, or 3D Scanning system, uses target and cloud to cloud registration to produce survey grade point clouds, typically accurate to 1-5mm dependent on method and equipment used. 3D Scanning also incorporates high-resolution imagery captured simultaneously during scanning to allow point cloud colourisation to give end users a better perspective and accurate representation of the site.

Inspection of our infrastructure isn’t always easy. Improved Safety

One of the main challenges of search and recovery is the environment, often unpredictable or unknown; with cold temperatures, ice cover, wind and strong currents posing risk to the safety of the diver. ROVs are useful as they eliminate the need to send divers into dangerous conditions or unsafe areas.

Fulcrum ROV’s are used where safety considerations to divers must be addressed to ensure no additional loss of life occurs during the search. Diver’s limited oxygen tanks affecting search times must be considered. Our ROVs can be used prior to sending a diver or in tandem to monitor the safety of the diver. Our service is used to improve the safety for divers as they can be used to assess conditions underwater and identify hazards to a diver before they submerge.

Improves Locating Abilities

Fulcrum ROVs can be equipped with Sonar and USBL Positioning Systems that allow search and rescue teams to generate areas where the target of interest could be. Sonars are an extremely important tool for large area SAR teams, as the imaging sonar on a ROV can be utilized for the search effort as well as reidentifying targets from side scan searches or diver searches. In murky water scenarios, human eyes or high definition cameras are virtually useless to search an area. Sonar is a critical tool to improve locating abilities.

As GPS does not work underwater and getting good quality imagery with just a camera can be a challenge, especially in murky water, sonar is an excellent technology for anyone with underwater work to understand and utilize.

Applications of SONAR Systems

Bathymetric studies

Bathymetry is the study of the "beds" or "floors" of water bodies, including the ocean, rivers, streams, and lakes. In this circumstance, SONAR is subject to use to determine the depth of ocean floors, allowing for safe navigation of the waters. This is how nautical charts have depth readings on them.

Pipeline inspections

Fulcrum services Gas and oil companies, for example, using SONAR to detect damage, spans, and rock dump integrity.

Explosive Ordinance Disposal / Mine Countermeasures

Fulcrum can use SONAR to detect explosive danger underwater. As the seafloors become exploited, it's important to identify cables and pipes in them. Finding unexploded bombs, mines, and torpedoes is important for overall safety and wellbeing. Finally SONAR is also fitted into submarines and ships to allow for underwater communication with other entities. It is common to see a towed or boat mounted side scan sonar used to scan large areas in patterns for anomalies, and then use a ROV with imaging sonar to reidentify the target and navigate toward it to confirm if it is the explosive.

Search and Recovery (Public Safety/Law Enforcement)

Fulcrum offer Sonar technology for use during Search and Rescue missions to make it easier and more efficient to locate evidence or victims of boating accidents or potential drownings in unclear waters. Side-scanning systems can help us to locate bodies and guide the divers to the site of the recovery. ROVs with imaging sonars offer a safe alternative to verify and recover the victim instead of divers.

Marine Salvage Efforts

Sonar technology can help us to locate underwater objects in deep salvage operations where murky waters may hinder maximum camera visibility. Identifying a shipwreck or other large structure from up to 200m away isn’t a stretch for our ROV mounted imaging sonars.

Offshore Wind Installation Support Surveys

Fulcrum can use SONAR for offshore wind turbines. Powerful SONAR systems are used for the assurance of safe installation of wind turbines. These sites must be subject to survey with great accuracy to ensure the foundation of the turbine is secure in the water.

Infrastructure Inspections

Large structures such as bridge pilings, dock piers, quay walls, and dams can be difficult to perform underwater inspections on due to the sheer size relative to a set of eyes through a camera on a ROV or a diver. Aerial sowing enables high technology productivity with comparatively low labor and material costs. Our environmentally friendly and low-energy-consuming aerial sowing can significantly reduce CO2 emissions in comparison with classical reforestation technologies (ie use of tractor equipment).  Aerial sowing can also be used on burnt forests with sandy loam and well-drained loamy soils, where the fire caused complete burning of the forest floor, as well as on transport-remote forest areas where there is no possibility of year-round travel.

Our experienced pilots fly drones fitted with an ultrasonic thickness gauge for both visual and wall thickness inspections. Don’t potentially compromise human safety on ropes, boom lifts, and scaffolding for industrial inspections, Fulcrum pilots stay on the ground while the drone performs inspections in hazardous locations.

Ultra-sonic thickness assessment

Fulcrum offer ultrasonic thickness measurement services from our custom-built drones. Using drones from non-destructive testing (NDT) in the form of ultra-thickness measurement of a tall asset negates the requirement of a human and lifts, scaffolding, ladders, elevated baskets, catwalks, or other solutions. Our services prevents putting humans in potentially dangerous situations when working at height. 

UT thickness measurements are used, just as the term implies, to test the thickness of assets, especially when access is only available on one side. It’s often used on storage tanks, flare stacks, wind turbine towers, and more. 

The goal of NDT processes like UT is to inspect assets, capture data, and identify potential problems while an asset is still up and running. Issues identified through NDT can be handled with less downtime, less disruption, and less risk. 

Using drones for UT thickness measurement is a unique application for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). While drones are widespread for visual inspection, they are not used as frequently for contact-based inspections like UT.
